Man charged in connection to Port Colborne jewelry store break-in

A Port Colborne man has been charged after a break-in at a jewelry store in the early hours this morning (March 29).

Niagara Police were called to the scene by a witness who saw the break-in in progress at 1:05 am at the jewelry store on West St. between Clarence St. andCharlotte St.

The witness told the police that the suspect came to the scene driving an older model green Dodge Caravan, broke the front window of the business and went inside. After grabbing merchandise “of an undisclosed value,” he took off in the van.

The police instantly converged on the area and began the search. As it turned out, the suspect didn’t get very far away as the police found the van two kilometers away on 3rd Ave. near Killaly St. West. After the suspect was arrested, all the stolen jewelry was recovered and returned to the owner of the business.

Jamie Edward Leggett, 49, of Port Colborne is charged with break and enter in a place other than your dwelling.

He was released from custody with a court date at the Welland Courthouse on June 23.
